Coaching and advisory for CROs and sales leaders
A working sounding board for the person who carries the number, from someone who has carried it.
Best at: growth and scale-up, in a new leader's first hundred days.
Leader Advisory is one-to-one coaching and advice for a CRO or VP Sales, most often in the first hundred days of a new role. It runs as a fortnightly working session on live deals, hires, compensation plans and board material, with direct access in between.
Who is sales leader coaching for?
- A newly appointed CRO or VP Sales in the first hundred days, with an inherited team.
- A chief executive who leads sales directly and wants an experienced second view.
- A sales leader preparing for a reorganisation, a new compensation plan or a difficult board meeting.
What does the leader receive?
- A confidential peer from outside the hierarchy.
- Review of key deals, hiring decisions and compensation plans.
- A second read of board material before it goes out.
- Support that makes the incumbent leader more successful. The role is a coach for the leader, not a second leader.
How do the sessions run?
A working session on whatever matters most that week: a deal, a hire, the forecast, the board pack.
Direct access by message or phone for decisions that cannot wait two weeks.
A review of the sales section of the board pack and the forecast behind it.
Every engagement has a fixed scope and a fixed fee, agreed in a short written proposal before work starts. Ongoing work is paid monthly in advance. There is no hourly billing, and no work on commission or for equity alone.
I have done the job at every stage: first sales hire, first commercial hire, leader of a six-country division taken into profit without a penny from head office, and interim VP Sales of a four-team region.
Frequently asked questions.
How is this different from executive coaching?
The sessions work on the job itself: the forecast, a stalled deal, a hire, the sales section of the board pack. It comes from someone who has carried the number, rather than from a general leadership framework.
We already have a VP Sales. Is this a second leader?
No. The role is a coach for the leader, not a second leader. The aim is to make the incumbent more successful.
How often do we meet?
Every fortnight, with access by message or phone in between for decisions that cannot wait two weeks.
What is the minimum term?
90 days, for a fixed monthly fee paid in advance.
Is it confidential?
Yes. I sit outside the hierarchy, which is much of the value: a peer the leader can think out loud with.
Would it help to talk it through?
Thirty minutes on what the board has committed to and what is in the way. If this service is not the right fit, I will say so.
